Writing about a Michelin star awarded restaurant is a first for me, let alone a 13 time Michelin star winner. Needless to say, I was very excited to experience Tamarind of London located on PCH in Newport Beach. It’s the sister restaurant of famed “Tamarind” in the UK which has elevated Indian cuisine to new levels for the Brits.

Sensing an opportunity in beautiful Orange County, these ambitious restaurateurs set up shop 3 years ago with the goal of redefining the Indian food experience. I say “experience” because Tamarind of London is whole heartedly dedicated to authentic Indian food, the good stuff. No need to redefine what has worked for thousands of years. Rather, Tamarind has taken their amazing food and redefined world class standards of service, amazing ambience, the highest quality ingredients and impeccable cleanliness.

Tamarind has a wonderful bar and we tried two of their most popular drinks.  Their Tower of London: Premium Gin, Chase Elderflower, Freshly muddled Cucumber and Basil, fresh Lime, simple syrup.   Their Narangi Crush:  Premium Vodka, Chase Elderflower, Freshly muddled Blood Oranges in Simple Syrup, splash of Grapefruit.

The kitchen operations are transparent and guests are encouraged to check out their three Tandoori ovens which are continuously churning out their delicious creations.

We started off our night with a delicious sampling of their Tandoori Grilled Prawns, Tandoori Chicken, Spiced Masala Potato Croquette and Spinach Roulade.

Their Chilean Sea Bass was the star of the night. Because it was uniquely prepared in a tandoori, it had a great char around the entire fish but was oh so moist and flaky inside.  It was prepared with Saffron-Ginger green chili marinade, Apricot curry sauce and Indian Risotto.

Their dessert offerings are new and evolved out of the need to satisfy the western sweet tooth.  And yes, they realize they aren’t 100% truly authentic but they’re delicious nonetheless!

Our night at Tamarind of London was fantastic and I can see why the restaurant is so highly acclaimed.  Looking forward to exploring more on the menu at our next visit!
