I’m a Chicagoan who was transplanted to California at the age of 8.  Some of my fondest memories of childhood were going to Lou Malnati’s, sitting at their red and white checkered tablecloths and devouring their delicious pizza.  Now as a Southern Californian, my only indulgence in Chicago style pizza is when I travel there for business a couple of times a year.  Not any more.  Great Chicago Style pizza has come to Orange County!  Rance’s on Harbor Blvd in Costa Mesa will allow me to live those delicious childhood memories anytime I want.

Rance Ruiz, the owner of this fine establishment, fell in love with Chicago Style Pizza while visiting his sister up in Berkeley.  The pizza he fell in love with was from a restaurant called Zachary’s which is widely credited for bringing Chicago Style Pizza to the west coast.  Once he got that first taste, he became a man obsessed and spent most of his waking hours perfecting his own Chicago Style pizza.  Let me tell you, he’s nailed it.

One thing that I did not get to do at 8 years old was pair my pizza with beer.  Rance’s has a variety of great beers on tap.  If you’re having trouble deciding, try the 4 Beer Sampler.

To start things off, we had their House Salad:  Leafy mixed spring greens, red onions, mushrooms and diced tomatoes, covered with shredded mozzarella and your choice of dressing.  In my case, I tried all 4 dressings which by the way are all house made.

Following is the best Spinach and Artichoke dip I’ve ever had.  That’s saying a lot as there are a gazillion restaurants that serve the stuff.  So what’s so different?  Rance’s adds bacon and jalapenos to give it a smoky and spicy kick.  It’s sooo good in it’s gooey magnificence.

On to the main event, Pizza!  We tried 3 pies each with their own unique spin on deliciousness.

What pizza review would be complete without a food pornographic cheese cascade picture?

The CSP is Rance’s homage to the pizza made famous at Zachary’s in Northern California.  My best friend is a certified Zachary’s nut from the Bay Area and can attest that Rance’s version is almost indistinguishable.

Lastly, I wanted to leave you with this image of their pizza’s perfectly flaky and crispy crust.  It’s just as crucial as the toppings and isn’t overlooked at Rances.

Well, I guess my trips to Chicago won’t be as special anymore, but I”m okay with that if it means having great Chicago pizza available anytime in Orange County!
